How big should my starting bankroll be?

Key takeaways:

Starting bankroll for value betting and sure betting

  • Value betting: Around €500 can be enough to get started, while €1,000+ gives you more flexibility.
  • Sure betting: We recommend at least €1,000, but €5,000–€10,000 is a more practical starting range.
  • Your ideal bankroll depends on your strategy, bet volume, number of bookmakers and available time.
  • A larger bankroll can increase your absolute profit potential, but it does not automatically mean a higher ROI. Make sure you only use money you can comfortably set aside for betting.
  • Long-term profit will come either way, so being able to use multiple bookmakers and avoid bookmaker limitations is key to longevity.

How big should my starting bankroll be?

To be able to answer this question, you have to first figure out how much money you want to make. But you also have to consider other factors. Let's break it down.

Time is a key factor

When it comes to bankroll management for sure betting and value betting, time is just as crucial as the amount of money you have to invest. How you allocate and manage your time can significantly influence your profitability and success.

Arbitrage betting

If you're sports arbitrage betting, a small bankroll and plenty of time may very well generate a profit equal to what you can make using a bigger bankroll, but with limited time.

As a guideline, we recommend spending, on average, 20 hours per week monitoring for arbitrage opportunities. Please note that we don't mean 20 hours of active trading time, just that you're able to monitor sure betting for new trades as they arrive.

If you work at a computer, you can run RebelBetting in the background, alerting you to arbs that meet your filter criteria. The actual placement of the arb only takes a minute.

If you have limited time, you should focus your arbing on evenings and weekends, when most games are played.

arbitrage bets vs value betting

Value betting

The same applies to Value betting as well. When value betting you will have to focus on the volume of bets. It is all about making profit over time, and you need to place as many bets as your time and bankroll allow.

You have to build confidence in the value-betting process and trust that you’ll make money long-term.

Another factor is how many bookmakers you use. The more capital you have, the more money you can use to fund bookmakers. More bookmakers mean more arbs and value bets – which in the end equals more money!

These factors combine to determine your total profit.

Minimum bankroll

For sure betting we recommend using a minimum bankroll of around €1.000 Euro.

The ideal scenario though, would be to start with €5.000 to €10.000 Euro. Having a larger starting bankroll means that you can fund more bookmakers and still have funds left to balance the accounts if some of them run out of money.

For value betting, we recommend a minimum bankroll of around €500 Euro. The same idea applies here though, the more money you can start with the higher the potential profits will be.

Note that the ideal starting bankroll for some isn't ideal for others. For instance, if you reside in a country with high gambling taxes or other applicable fees, you may want an even bigger bankroll to start with. A bigger starting capital will generate more money, since the profit stands in proportion to your bankroll.

Pros and cons of different starting capital:

Less than €1.000 bankroll

A bankroll smaller than €1.000 would not be suitable for sure betting in the long run. If you lack starting capital, you should first take advantage of bookmaker bonuses by using matched betting. This is a good entry point to the sure betting world and will help boost a small bankroll. RebelBetting is focused solely on finding arbitrage opportunities.

Search different bookmakers to take advantage of risk free bonuses and free bets

Another option is to use value betting. Value betting is a more capital-efficient strategy for smaller bankrolls. When you consistently identify genuine value and place enough bets, the strategy is designed to generate positive expected value over time. Value betting is taking advantage of the bookmakers’ overpriced odds, where you only bet on a single odd at a time. This means that you will lose bets as well, but you will always have an edge over the bookmaker and profit over time.

Small bankroll €1.000-2.000

When arbitrage betting with a small bankroll, you have to be clever and manage your money well. You may struggle to keep your bookmaker accounts funded. This depends, of course, on how many bookmakers you use, but ideally, you would use at least 6-8 bookmakers when starting out.

You want to have enough money deposited at your bookmakers to be able to cover your next couple of bets, even when some of your money is 'locked in' while waiting for the bets to get graded. If you have a small bankroll, we recommend you to do value betting.

Medium bankroll €2.000-10.000

When arbitrage betting, a capital of 2.000-10.000 would be enough to cover many bookmakers and still have money left to balance the accounts if some of them run out of money. With a capital this size, you should use Sure betting or Value betting. The good thing is – both are included in a RebelBetting subscription.

Large bankroll €10.000-25.000

With a sizeable bankroll, you will not have any trouble keeping your bookmakers balanced when arbing or value betting. However, if you have a big bankroll you'll likely want to play with higher stakes.

This could be a bit tricky due to the bet-limits bookmakers have on their odds. The top bookmakers accept bets of a few thousand euros, but usually not more. This means that there is a realistic "cap" of the amount of money you can make per month.

Why value betting requires less starting capital

Value betting usually requires less starting capital than sure betting because you only need to fund one side of each bet. You are not constantly splitting money between several bookmakers to cover every possible outcome.

That makes your bankroll easier to use efficiently. With value betting, even a relatively small bankroll can be enough to start building volume, especially if you use sensible stake sizing and have access to several bookmakers.

Sure betting is a bit more demanding. Your money can end up scattered across different bookmaker accounts, waiting for bets to settle or sitting in exactly the wrong place when a good opportunity appears. In other words, your bankroll occasionally develops a mind of its own.

With value betting, capital is generally easier to move, reuse and scale over time. That is why around €500 can be enough to get started, while a larger bankroll mainly gives you more flexibility, more betting opportunities and smoother growth.

Why sure betting requires a larger bankroll

Sure betting needs more starting capital because you are covering all outcomes of the same event, often across two or more bookmakers. That means more money is tied up at the same time.

Your bankroll also needs to be spread across several bookmaker accounts. And, as every sure bettor eventually discovers, the best opportunity has a strange habit of appearing at the bookmaker where you currently have the least money.

A larger bankroll gives you more room to keep accounts funded, place both sides of an arbitrage, and continue betting while other bets are still unsettled. It also makes it easier to use more bookmakers, which gives you access to more sure bets.

That is why we recommend at least €1,000 to get started, while €5,000–€10,000 gives you much more flexibility and makes the practical side of sure betting considerably easier.

Starting vs. Current Bankroll in RebelBetting

Your starting bankroll is the amount of money you set aside when you begin value betting or sure betting. It gives you a clear starting point and helps determine suitable stake sizes, how many bookmakers you can use, and how much betting volume you can handle.

Your current bankroll is what your bankroll is worth now, after profits and losses. As your bankroll changes, your stake sizes should normally adjust with it. If your bankroll grows, you can gradually place larger bets. If it decreases, reducing your stakes helps keep your risk at a sensible level.

For example, if you start with a €1,000 bankroll and grow it to €1,300, your starting bankroll is still €1,000, while your current bankroll is €1,300.

The key difference is simple: your starting bankroll shows where you began, while your current bankroll should guide how much you bet today.

Here are some helpful tips to know of – no matter how small or big a bankroll you have.

  • An e-wallet helps you balance your accounts. Aim to keep about 10% of your total bankroll in your e-wallet for easy deposits if an account runs out of money.
  • When you open up accounts at new bookmakers, make sure you take advantage of all bonuses first.
  • If you are interested in value betting, read the Ultimate guide to value betting. It covers everything from the basics to more advanced tips.
  • If you are curious to get started with arbitrage betting, the full Ultimate Guide to sure betting will teach you everything you need to know about bankroll management and sports arbitrage.

Both sure betting and value betting are included in RebelBetting. No need to choose a specific method right away.

FAQ: value & sure betting bankroll

How much bankroll do I need to start value betting?

Around €500 can be enough to get started with value betting, while €1,000 or more gives you more flexibility. A larger bankroll allows you to place more bets, spread activity across more bookmakers and handle normal short-term variance more comfortably.

With RebelBetting, your stake recommendations are calculated based on your bankroll, risk settings and the value of each betting opportunity, making it easier to scale your betting as your bankroll changes.

Can I start value betting with less than €500?

Yes, but a very small bankroll can limit your stake sizes and the number of betting opportunities you can realistically use. You also need to consider the subscription cost and the psychological aspect of being in the red for a while before variance catches up.

Starting with more than €500 gives you room to build volume without having every bet represent a large share of your bankroll.

If you are starting small, RebelBetting can help you focus on value bets that match your bankroll and preferred risk level rather than simply betting the same amount on every opportunity.

How much of my bankroll should I bet on each value bet?

We strongly advocate for the kelly criterion staking strategy. The RebelBetting platform integrates this staking strategy smartly and will automatically recommend the best stake sizes for each bet based on your current bankroll.

How much bankroll do I need for sure betting?

We recommend at least €1,000 for sure betting, although €5,000–€10,000 is a more practical range. Sure betting requires distributing capital across multiple bookmakers so you can cover all outcomes of the same event.

RebelBetting continuously scans bookmaker odds for arbitrage opportunities, so having enough capital available across several accounts helps you act on more of the sure bets you find.

Why does sure betting require more money than value betting?

Sure betting requires you to place bets on multiple outcomes, often at different bookmakers. This means more capital is tied up at the same time, and your funds need to be spread across several accounts. Value betting usually requires only one bet per opportunity.

Should my betting bankroll be separate from my personal money?

Yes. Your bankroll should consist of money you can comfortably set aside for betting without affecting everyday expenses or other financial commitments. Keeping it separate also makes it easier to track your actual betting performance.

What is bankroll management and why is it important for betting?

Bankroll management is the strategy of allocating and managing your betting funds to minimize risk and maximize long-term profitability. It's crucial because it helps prevent significant losses, allows you to bet consistently, and ensures you have the resources to take advantage of betting opportunities.

How can I track my bankroll and bets effectively?

To track your bankroll and bets effectively, use the RebelBetting BetTracker. This tool records your bets, tracks your performance, and provides detailed analytics. It helps you manage your bankroll efficiently, analyze your betting patterns, and make informed decisions to maximize profitability. It's an essential resource for serious bettors.

Does a larger bankroll mean higher profits?

A larger bankroll can increase your absolute profit potential because you can place larger stakes and take advantage of more opportunities. However, it does not automatically improve your percentage return or guarantee better results.

The same principle applies when using RebelBetting: more capital can increase the amount you are able to put to work, but long-term performance still depends on finding genuine value, using sensible stakes and placing enough bets - and if you are able to avoid bookmaker limitations.

What happens to my starting bankroll as I win or lose?

Your starting bankroll does not change; it simply records the amount you began with. Your current bankroll changes as you make profits or losses and should generally be the amount you use when deciding future stake sizes.

RebelBetting uses your bankroll and selected risk settings when calculating recommended stakes, so keeping your current bankroll up to date helps keep those recommendations relevant.
